ALQUNAYTARA

Land of the Golan

The Golan:
The Golan heights are at an elevation of 1000m above the sea level, 70 km south of Damascus. It is overlooked by snow covering Mount Harmon, and dissicated by deep sceneries of fields, meadows and orchards. At the end of the deep canon of Yarmouk river lies the hot sulphurous spring of Himmeh, pouring out of the rocks at nearly boiling temperature.
The Golan is one of the richest places over the world in archeological sites. Villagers as a result of forbidden diggings are selling many archeological jewel, precious stones and ornamental glasses, even today. They belong mainly to the Roman period when the area was known as Decapolis (the ten towns).
The strategic importance of the Golan Heights has made them a battleground throughout history. In the present day, they are the victims of the Israeli aggression.

Al-Qunaytra:
A rural market serving more than 100 villages, it is also in archeological monument from Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Arab periods. It is now partly destroyed by the Israeli aggression, but some of its beautiful red-tile roofed houses are still standing.

Al-Qunaytra Museum:
It contains some archeological finds and many pictures of the province.

Sbebeh Castle:
It overlooks Banias and the upper valley from great height. The Arabs constructed it as a defense against crusaders. The view from it is magnificent. Its architectural is also well adapted to the site.
